Endometriosis causes birth risk??

New Australian research shows that having ovarian endometriosis doubles the risk of premature birth in women using assisted reproductive technologies.

Yes I agree with you Kara. I hope I haven't worried any Endo girls unnecessarily.

There are a few errors in this article (aren't there always!)

The study found an increased risk of preterm birth in women with ovarian endometrioma (not endometriosis).

And the number of patients studied to assess this risk was only 95 women (not 6000).

As Kara says, ask your doc if you are in any way concerned!

Just a little more info...

I got hold of the original paper because it sounded like a good study (6000 women studied!).

But the study was actually looking at lots of different things. Only 95 women in the study had endometrioma and IVF. Of these 95 women, 83% women gave birth on time, and 17% gave birth early.

Therefore the authors of the paper think it is worth researching whether removing endometrioma before starting IVF is worthwhile, as it might prevent these early births.

FWIW, I think this sample size of less than 100 women is too small to draw any conclusions. Definitely more research is needed. Finally, lots of women in the study had endometriosis, which was found to not be linked with preterm birth.

I'll shut up now :D

I had an ovarian endometroima (as in huge cyst made of endometrial tissue) removed in 1998. Do I need to worry?

Thanks Willo for the info, that is really helpful. Maria if you had endometrioma removed, you should not worry. I thought endometrioma on ovary and ovarian endometriosis is same?

(Sorry for delay, had tossed the paper in the bin :snigger:)

Endometrioma is a special type of endometriosis that invades the ovary to form cysts.

Its more common to have ovarian endometriosis, where the endo is just found on the surface of the ovaries. In this study, over 500 women had ovarian endometriosis, and it wasn't found to be linked with early birth.

Unfortunately the newspapers got the wrong end of the stick, saying that endometriosis is linked to preterm birth. It isn't.

Hi Maria, personally I don't think this is anything to worry about (but you could always ask your doc about it).

This study is suggesting research into surgically removing the endometrioma before IVF is started, but you've already had that done.
