IVF/ICSI treatment abroad

I am getting really frustrated at waiting for clinics to get their finger out and give us an appointment just to get on the waiting list for treatment. (I truly feel for all couples who have to wait for the NHS to get the wheels in motion as even the wait that we are having is awful).

Has anyone had experience of having treatment abroad? Does anyone know of any good websites? I am currently looking at treatment in Norway with Scan-Health, the CRM in Napol,i Italy, and another called EUGEN in Barcelona. Ideally we would like a clinic which would allow us more than one embryo to be transferred. I know the USA clinics can do this but I think cost will become an implication as will the distance to travel. Ideally we need somewhere easily accessible by plane within a couple of hours. DH can't take too much time off work so we need to be able to spend as little time as possible away from home whilst undergoing the treatment.

If anyone has any pointers I would be extremely grateful for the assistance!

You could come to my clinic in South Africa, but it is a really long-haul flight for you. They transfer 2 embies and freeze whatever they can. The wait is a lot shorter than in the UK, the cost (even with travel and accomodation) is a bit lower and they use a short protocol that you can start at home or here with first scan on about day 9. You need to have up to date test results (within the last 6 months) and if your AF is not predictable you use the pill to be able to regulate when you come on in order to make flight bookings etc well in advance.
If you are interested, send me a PM and I will PM you all the details as well as the email addy of my doctor.

Thanks for that guys. Pixie, the Hausken clinic is the one I have been researching. I have emailed them to request success rate snad a full price guide, but at £1600 for ICSI, I reckon even with travel and accommodation on top of that, plus the cost of drugs it will still come in at way below UK prices so I am really excited about that. I just want to confirm that they will transfer more than one embryo. As I understand it, the rules in Norway are that they encourage single embryo transfer but there isn't yet a rule which says they can only transfer one.

Rene, you idea of travel to South Africa is also a viable one for us. My DH lived near Cape Town several years ago and I am sure he would relish the chance to visit again, and if we get pregnant at the same time all the better!

Ooh I'm all excited! I spoke to the clinic in Norway today, and they basically said that as soon as DH and I know when we can get a flight, to let them know and they will book us an initial consultation with the doc in the clinic. I'm phoning back tomorrow to have a chat with the consultant, to ask about protocols and stuff to basically give us some idea of time frame for treatment. DH is self employed, and some of the projects he is working on at the mo are very time specific, so I may have to go to the initial appointment on my own, which is ok.

I feel like things are starting to move for us again and i feel very positive. I also feel a lot healthier than I did when we started treatment before. I am the sort of person who really suffers during the cold months, so to have treatment in the warm weather is great for me. I haven't really lost any weight, but I am eating a lot healthier and taking much more excercise. Hopefully this week, I will have a date for an appointment. Can't wait!!

:thumbsup2: OMG!! We have an appointment with the clinic in Norway on 27th June!! They are closed throughout July so it looks as if we may well have our treatment in August, which is just fantastic! I am so excited to be finally moving forward. I have heard nothing but good things about this clinic, and apparently their success rate is around 40%.

Hi Kar, the ICSI costs only £1600 and that includes all the tests you need, scans, blood tests and sperm analysis. (The drugs cost is on top of this, but are also a little bit cheaper than the UK). It sounded too good to be true, but Addy is using the same clinic and confirmed it, and I also called them and they confirmed it too. The only other costs involved are travel and hotel. The flights I have booked cost 1p each with Ryanair (with taxes it came to a grand total of £77 for BOTH return tickets!). The plane flies right into the town where the clinic is, and there is also a discount available at a local hotel. It costs just £60 per couple per night to stay and that included breakfast and evening meal! Addy reckons here package comes to just over £3000, but her and her DH are staying 10 days and having a bit of a hol out there at the same time. We'll probably only stay a week when we go back for EC and ET cos DH has to work.

The thing that appeals most to me about this place isn't the fact that it's cheaper. It's because they give you a personal service, they listen and are available pretty much whenever you want to speak to them. You can even get hold of the consultant for a chat! (Never been able to do that over here!)

I just can't wait to get the ball rolling now.

They will put 2 back for you. Apparently the consultant will chat to you about the risk of multiple birth etc, but will put 2 embryos back if thats what you want. (tha was par tof my criteria for using this clinic).

There is another clinic in Italy which I was researching though. I haven't gone as in depth with it, but sounded similar. It was a similar price too. The law in Italy is that they can only fertilise 3 eggs in any cycle, but they must replace all 3 of those embryo's in one transfer. The triplet rate is going up in Italy, but their success rates for singletons are also increased.

This is the site I was looking at www.treatmentabroad.net/infertility-trea…vf-clinic-italy

Fantastic news that you've got booked in and everything looks set for August. Fingers, legs and toes crossed for an easy, straightforward treatment and a big fat BFP!

I had an ICSI/egg donation cycle at Cape Fertility Clinic in Cape Town, South Africa. It was a truly wonderful experience, even if it didn't work! I had 3 eggs put back in - the other 3 perished so weren't frozen. The docs were great, everything was so relaxed, and for the price of the same treatment in the UK we got the treatment and a holiday.

Good luck and keep us all posted.

I think rather than pinning all our hopes on this working, I am looking upon it as an experience more than anything. It is a chance for us to go to a country we haven't been before, to see how they do things, see some scenery, (and lets face it, Norway has lots of that!) DH has spent lots of time in Sweden before and really liked it and I think Norway is quite similar. It's giving us something to look forward to as well, as we will be going for a week when we have EC and ET. Rather than that being a week frought with worry and traffic jams as we travel to the clinic, it's going to be a nice relaxed time when we can occupy ourselves with being tourists!

I am really looking forward to it, (as you might have gathered!) If we get a BFP out of it, then all the better! We'll have to find some nice Norwegian names for our offspring!

Grrr just to throw a spanner in the works, we have just tried to book into the hotel near the clinic in Norway. It offers big discounts to clients of the clinic, but hasn't got a room for us when we go over! My fault entirely of course as I should have thought about this before I booked the flights. Now I have to wait to speak to the clinic tomorrow to see what they suggest. Ah well, if necessary I will take a sleeping bag and doss on the side of the road!! Hopefully it won't come to that cos DH isn't a great fan of roughing it!! Ho hum, never straight forward is it! I got on the net the other day and have got us booked into another hotel. It works out a bit more expensive, as the other hotel offered a really good discount for clinic clients, but hey, it's small fry if we manage to get our much wanted BFP!! It's only for a couple of nights anyway so no drama.

Hello,

Just to join in on the chat of overseas treatment. I currently live in Germany and know a satisfied customer (they had twins on their 1st attempt) that recommends a clininc in Munich. They have been helpful doing blood tests for me during my treatment for FET. My frozen embryos are in England so I have to travel back for ET. Their website is www.ivf.bbn.de

I intend to use this clinic if we are unsuccessful with our FETs from England.

Good luck
Daisychain

Hi Daisychain, welcome to the site. Thanks for the info on the clinic in Munich. It's really good to get good ratings for other clinics. Opens up the options a bit for everyone. I know it's not everyone's choice, but I persoally don't care where we travel to, as long as we get first rate treatment.

Kara and ellie, I feel very relieved that I managed to sort out the hotel situation. Can't wait to get over there now, get a date and get started. Since we had our BFN in April, I feel like everything has stood still. We've been waiting for appointments, waiting for results, and nobody has seemed interested in taking our money and giving us treatment! I have never been so eager to give thousands of pounds to anyone!!

That sounds promising Kara. I know quite a few Indian women in this country are choosing to go to India for their treatment due to the success rates. Well worth looking at I'd say.

Ohh it looks fabby!

I got all excited then thinking they could help us but they don't do donor sperm. :tears:

I wonder if they would do the SSR with DH sperm and how much it'll cost? Does the 3 grand include your DH's SSR Mrs smiff?

Thanks

Sorry - my fault - SSR - surgical sperm retrieval. I was assuming (as I do) that you were having DH sperm extracted for the ICSI. If youre not just ignore me lol! whoops3

Hi Susie,

No we aren't having SSR. Hubby has sperm present, just not as many as we'd like!

The cost for SSR (I think they call it TESE or SESE) is £200 on top of the £1600 for ICSI. Still a hell of a lot cheaper than over here!

According to the director of the clinic in Norway, they can offer this treatment so cheaply because couples over there are GUARANTEED 3 treatments paid for in their entirety from the government (their equivelant of our NHS) If the private treatment were more expensive, nobody would use it.

I've just double checked the cost of PESA/TESE, as I had a wobble when you said how much it is over here Susie. I was wrong. The cost of ICSI is £1600 and IVF treatment with PESA/TESE is £1700-so they only actually charge £100 more. Well worth looking at if you are going to have to go through this procedure.

I was looking at the Malpani clinic / Bombay last year.
The prices where so much cheaper and with flights and accommodation still less than here.
We have also looked at one clinic in Sarasota, Florida. And there we can stay with DH's sister.
Both clinics would put more than two embyros in which is what I want, I know it's not ideal but I have had three good embyros in both treatments and feel that maybe all three should've been put in. If 2 didn't take they is nothing to say that all 3 will but at least you get that one more chance, if you see what I mean.

I know what you mean Jaid. I think if we have 2 or more unsuccessful attempts, then I would seriously consider going somewhere where we could have more embryo's put back, but it would really have to be after we had exhausted other alternatives. I think we will always ask the question what if? after we have had a successful attempt with 2 embryo's. What if they had put a third back? maybe that one would have implanted.
