Pre-Adoption Training course

Hiya there i am back after a long journey of TTC then IVF and a 3 year break we have decided to go ahead with adoption : D We are very excited and nervous at the same time (which am sure everyone feels the same at this stage). So we are very early on infact just sent the form in 3 days ago but we have or first opening evening next wed 12th feb.
We are quite shy people and we are aware that there is a 4 day training course we have to do as part of the process and wondered if anyone can tell me or share your experiences about the course.
We understand theirs allot of information to go through but what else does it include, eg does it involve us having to do couple presentations, group activity etc.
Also one of my fears is the 1st Panel, is this something we have to speak at or does the social worker do this for us

Any help, advise info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance x x x

Hi Laura

Welcome back & how wonderful that you have decided to go down the adoption route. My DH & I are also on the adoption route and are due to bring our LO home at the end of March.

I am also quite a shy person in front of people I don't know and I was dreading the course, however it was absolutely fine. We didn't have to do any presentations but we did have to do group activiities not role play or anything just discussions. It helps if you have a good group. We were very lucky as there was only 1 other couple ready when we were so it was small/intimate. But honestly there is nothing to worry about I promise.

It is however very natural to feel nervous. Pop over the adoption diaries section as there is quite a few of us there.

I hope this helps a little - feel free to PM if you want to know anything further.

Wishing you lots of luck/happiness as you embark on this wonderful journey.

blowkiss

Hi Laura,

It's lovely to hear that you're embarking on adoption. We brought our DD home in July and have never been happier! Like you I was quite apprehensive over the prep group days but it really was a strange situation in that before you know it you're talking with all these strangers like you've known them for years and I couldn't wait to get back for day two in the end! We didn't have role plays either but as. Wardie says, group discussions etc. as far as panel goes you will be expected to go but your SW will be representing you too and you'll be fully prepared by the time it comes round to answer any questions. I can't tell you you won't be nervous because you will but it will all be worth it! I'm also here for you to ask any questions you may think of. Wishing you loads of luck at this very exciting time! X x

Hiya

We started adoption before giving icsi a go, it was only 3 days we had and it was mostly aimed at fostering, I didn't learn anything to be honest, there was a few group activities and a few open discussion/topics, myself and dh are very private but being police officers have very strong views esp in relation to children, this clashed somewhat with social work opinion but they appreciated our honesty, there was only one other couple doing adoption and we have remained friends with them so I'm glad we done it and will be back one day in the future to adopt

Good luck xx

Hi.
We are mid intros with our son.
So we done prep back in april/may I am a very shy person and was quietest on prep. Our home study was great we had a fab sw and found her so easy to talk to.
As for panel....approval panel I was a total wreck, we had to answer 4 questions but ot was stuff about us and we were told the questions a few mins before meeting panel. I know its easier said than done but do not worry hun and good luck
LYNSEY xx

After x3 ICSI X2 FETs resulting in :BFN:s Apart from the last one being a faint :BFP: (only lasted a day or two) I was turned down as an egg donor so we called it a day with TX
