Poor Quality Eggs

Hi Everyone,

We finished our first cycle of ICSI about 2.5 weeks ago which ended in a negative. We went back for our consultation yesterday and was informed that the reason it appears things didn't work was down to the quality of my eggs. The doctor said that they were quite optomisitc for us due to age (i'm 30, husband 33), the way I had responded to all parts of the treatment and that all my tests previously had been fine. However. at egg collectin they got 20, but lots of them were bad. I had 5 what he called sonar eggs - and outside shell but no insides. He said it is very rare to have 1, but I had 5 of these! I asked and he said he has never seen a case with 5 before. We had 8 go on to fertilize, but grew slowly and none made balstocyst (he said they would have hoped that at least 2-3 should have made it). They transferred 2 embryos and all the others left didn't survive. He summed up the reason he thinks it didn't work was due to the poor quality of my eggs. He has said that they don't know if this will happen again and the only way to find out is to try again. But basically if it happens again and my egg quality is poor, there really isn't anything that can be done. They are going to change my medictaion from menopur to something else next time to see if that makes any difference.

Obviosuly this has really hit me hard as i'm convinced that basically this means it's ust not going to work for us. If I had 20 eggs which were all poor, I am worried that next time will be just the same. I knew IVF would be a journey, but I thought eventually we would get there. I am now really scared we never will. My husband keeps telling me to stay positive for next time and that I may react completely different next time and with different medicine but it's so hard.

I was just wondering if anyone has had anything similar and if anyone with poor eggs has had any success?

Thankyou in advance.

Hi hon.

Sorry about your failed TX. I honestly wouldnt get too down on the egg quality, based on your first tx. Instead I would look at possibilities to improve egg quality and protocols for your next tx.
IVF go 1 is really atrial run. I have had 4 in my lifetime and they were all different. My 3rd didnt get to ET.

I took Royal Jelly in the hope to improve my eggs. Please discuss with your clinic before taking
them.

Good luck with your next TX my lovely.

Hi there

I have not yet had a BFP but I changed from Menopur on my first cycle to Gonal F on my second. My embryo quality really improved so please don't feel too disheartened as I feel sure that the protocol was a big part of this. Feel free to PM me and I can tell you a bit more as I looked into this a lot before our second cycle.

Thank you both ro your replies. My consultant said there was nothing I could do to improve the quality but if there are things such as the Royal Jelly, I will certainly look into it and speak to them.

Thanks again

Hi BissyRocket and welcome to :FZ:

taxi is right, you can take supplements and also change your diet to improve egg quality. However as she said you need to consult qualified people before doing this. There are a lot of good nutritionists about. I chose one form the Zita West network, as they specialise in fertility issues. Zita West nutritionists also do phone consultations. Check her website. Alternatively find a nutritionist based in your area that specialises in fertility.

Diet and lifestyle can greatly affect the quality of your eggs, I can't understand why your clinic said you can't do anything about it, especially considering that you are only 30! I suspect that they were poor quality also because you made so many eggs. These days they aim to make you produce less and better quality eggs, as a lot of the time when you make a lot of eggs they tend to be poor quality. A change in protocol will also make the difference.

Start now though as it takes time (3months) for diet and supplements to have an effect. You can start simply by following a healthy diet and removing things like alcohol and caffeine. Start taking a good pregnancy supplement like pregnancare too. Then get an appointment with the nutritionist as soon as you can so you will be ready for your next treatment. She or he will be able to advice you about other supplements and have a proper diet plan, as nobody here is qualified to do this.

By the way your husband also has to take a multivitamin for conception and cut alcohol. This is the hardest part!

Good luck and don't give up.
Take care

Thank you for all your advice. I will try and get to see a nutritionist asap. We did live like nun's last round - no alcohol, no caffine, no hot baths, lots of veg and fruit, loose boxers, vitamins - everything we were told! The consultant did say that they produced a large number of eggs last time and that they are hoping to have less this time - aiming for quality not quantity. But when he said that he had never seen 5 of these 'sonar' eggs before and we know he has been doing it for 21 years, and that there is nothing we can do to change the egg quality it really was a blow. Lets hope he was just being worst case senario and try and get back to being positive for next time round.

Thank you again

Taxihome is right after 1 go I wouldn't worry just yet hun, I just had my 3rd cycle and to help improve egg quality I took high strength royal jelly for 3 months before and also maca supplement to help both me and DP with quality of eggs/sperm. It seemed to help as the first 2 cycles we had 50%? Fertilisation rate and this cycle 90% and 2 blasts to freeze. Will be starting it again in a couple Of weeks. Good luck with everything. Xxxx

Hi Hon

You have been given heaps of advice & the ones about protocols, meds, nutrition etc are fab.
I agree with Maria that you CAN improve egg quality & that you may have just produced too many.

Have you looked into a short protocol? Ask your clinic about wether this might benefit you. It is a more natural cycle, no DRing. If you feel your cons is not very informative, sensitive & negative, change clinics.
I am astonished he has given you the "bad egg quality" diagnisis on round 1.
Of course he is the pro, but it all seems to eager to me.

I only got 2 mature eggs (out of 6)on the 3rd go, the rest were just shells & immature (Diff clinics, diff partner & 14 years apart from 2nd go) which my cons said looked ok ish. However he just said, we will try a short protocol. We cant give up after the first round.
My last round which resulted in my daughter, they got 12 eggs, 5 fertilised & 3 went well to day 3.
I shall be looking out for you too see how you are doing. blowkiss

Thank you all so much for your positive commenrs and advice. It seems so strange that the consultant was so matter of fact with telling us there was nothing we could do, but having spoken to you all there seems to be numerous things that can possibly help. Maybe he just doesn't suggest things he isn't sure about. I know he talked down reflexology when I mentioned it saying he doesn't know anything about it and nor does he want to.

Apparently he is very well known for being great at IVF, but also know for not being the most sympathetic or approachable guy. He is straight to the point, doesn't look you in the eye and just tells it straight.

I think I will take us off to buy Royal Jelly & Maca tomorrow - surely anything we can try has to be worth a shot. I don't have long until I re-start though - I think towards the end of Jan. Hopefully I can get some benefit if I start straight away. We are going to pop i and see the clinic on Monday too.

Taxihome - at the moment we are still undergoing our NHS treatment as we receive 2 goes here so we have been refrerred to this consultant and not sure if we have the option to change? I know he is very highly thought of, but I am thinking about asking to see the other consultant there as he sounds a little more friendly!

Thanks again all - you are making me feel a little better about things rather than keep welling up! :)

You have already had loads of advice on here, but I really just wanted to share my experience with you. I took co-enzyme q10 up until egg collection on my cycle, although always discuss what you are taking with your clinic before doing so and never just take everything as they can affect each other. I also did acupuncture. Everyone is different - I am convinced that menopur helped me a lot as on my last cycle I wasn't getting so many eggs, but they put me onto that and it improved dramatically. Also a short protocol might work for you better - I got less, but better quality eggs on that cycle.

Miracles do happen and I have heard many miracle stories on this site. We never truly know what does or does not do the trick and so we just need to keep trying. Wishing you all the best. Hopefully your miracle will happen very soon. xxx

Sorry about your cycle :(

I've just been put on Metformin after immune blood tests and that is supposed to help to control over stimulation and improve egg quality so maybe worth a mention xx
