Blocked Tubes

If you have this, do they just refer you for IVF or do they try and unblock them? Can they do this? Sorry, asking for a friend but dont know alot about it. ?(

Hi there,

I think sometimes they will look at what is causing the blockage and if they can, they will try and unblock before referring for IVF. I would imagine it depends on the individual.

One other thing to think about is that IVF doesn't use your tubes so it could be that even if someone's tubes are blocked, they can be referred for IVF. I think that most PCTs like to try and unblock first in the hope that a patient will fall pregnant naturally.

I have also read somewhere that it depends on why the blockage is there - some tubes have some kind of toxicity which needs to be sorted prior to IVF anyway.....if you look online you might be able to find some info on it. I have read that this kind of issue can effect the outcome of IVF treatment.

Best for things to get looked at first I think.

I'm not sure you can unblock the tubes. I have 1 blocked tube and after they found that out they referred me for IVF tx straightaway.
It depends a lot on your PCT's policy, but unblocked tubes may still not be viable as the inside is very delicate.
Good luck x
