Metformin + kidney test

Hi Ladies,

Ive been on metformin for pcos for well over a year now,
I never read the leaflets as a rule when i get knew tablets, not sure why, just dont like seeing the side effects before i take them rotf
Well today just started on a new box, and thought what the hell i'll read the leaflet, and it says that you should have regular kidney tests, because of lack of b12 or something???!!!
Has anyone else been given this test while taking them? as ive never had it mentioned to me by my con, so not sure if its something i should be demanding to have done??

Any help greatly appreciated :D
Thanks in advance xx

Hiya,

Just done a bit of research!

Metformin *can* cause a B12 deficiency if taking high a high dosage. The usual dosage for diabetics is 1000mg twice a day.

It may be worth speaking to your GP about it.

Metformin can stop the body from absorbing the vitamin which then causes the deficiency.

I'll have a look to see what else I can find out about it and will get back to you again chick!

:hugs:

Hi Cheenab,

I've been on Metaformin for ages because of PCOS and while I was on it, my clinic told me to take Vitamin B12 as a supplement. This might solve the potential problem?

Hiya,

Ok, so I had a look and it looks like what I said before. Speak to your cons. It may be worth having a test to check your B12 and then taking supplements if you need to as too much B12 can be bad too!

You should be able to get the supplements from a chemist or your cons may prescribe them for you!
