low 2 million - can too much exercise be a factor?

Hello...

My DH has had 3 SA done since April this year, all have been between 1 to 2 million. This has been a hard few months for us but has only bought us closer together.

My DH loves running and exercise, he loves running marathons, he roughly does about 50 miles over a 1 week period... I've read before that too much exercise can cause a low sperm count, but would it make it this low??? Our clinic has said that if he stopped his running it might make a slight difference, but not enough for a good chance of conceiving naturally.

We start D/R drugs next week. But I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts or views on this with the SA being so low??

RE: low 2 million - can too much exercise be a factor?

Hi Melly,

There is no doubt that excessive exercise can affect the sperm picture, mainly because of the overheating that this can cause to the testicles. There is some compensation I suppose, in that the wearing of shorts whilst running allows better circulation and cooling than when wearing heavy trousers or a uniform. But if he wears any sort of support underpants whilst running then even this benefit is lost. If he also takes too hot a bath or a shower after training then this will also cause overheating and reduce sperm production.

The effects of such overheating are difficult to predict, and I would feel that this alone would not be enough to reduce a totally normal sperm output down to two million. But at this low level anything that he can do to push up his sperm count is worth doing. Only by giving it a try by reducing his running for 12-14 weeks and reducing the temperature of his showers, will prove what benefits there could be from attending to this over potential testicular overheating situation.

Kind regards,

Melly I just wanted to wish you all the very best with your treatment. My DH has a sperm count of around half a million each time, and with the help of ICSI we now have a very healthy baby boy. Hope you enjoy the same success as us.
