Gonal F vs. Menopur/Puregon

Hi!

I am wondering what is the difference in these stims? Is Gonal F considered a 'weaker' stim and menopur/puregon more aggressive? I say this cause I was on Gonal F last cycle and only produced 5 follies...but I see other women (older?) are given other drugs. I am also worried about quality because if more aggressive drugs produce many eggs but of lesser quality I'll stick with my gonal F which produced only 3 eggs but two good embryos from those.

I was also told that every month is different....

Yes, I really like the gonal f pens, but if they are so good why doesn't every one use them in just higher doses?

Like you I heard that you can get totally different results with the same drugs, same dose, on different months...

I got on fine with puregon, ok I over stimmed, but I was at high risk of that happening anyway as i'm only 24. The puregon pen was really easy and simple.
As has been said I think it just depends what clinic your at, and how easily they can get hold of the meds from month to month. Not the one drug will suit everyone anyway.

My understanding is and I could be wrong, but that Gonal F can produce better quality eggs whereas Menopur may produce more eggs, but less quality... I had very different results on both..

I don't know. I got given menopur, but I have no problem ovulating. I was kept to a very low dose cos it gave a big cyst and had too many follicles at the start. In the end, cos of the low dose, I only ened up with 3 eggs

I think it depends on the clinic....

I don't know, I'm asking cause I was put on 187.5 Gonal F short protocol and got only 5 follies, 3 eggs, and two embryos.

So I am thinking if this cycle doesn't work, either up the dosage of gonal f or switch to a different drug? It just seems that on Menopur women seem to have more eggies... But maybe it's just me.

2 cycles of Menopur prodcued 17 and 18 eggs for me, of which 12 were mature both times..

3rd cycle with Gonal F produced 12 eggs, only 1 was mature, but the maturity(in my opinion) isn't down to the drugs, it's down to EC being too early...

I think there is no secret formula for this....there are so many variables and for each person it is totally different, in different months. I was just disappointed that I had no frosties and will have to go through the whole thing again if it doesn't work.

SBruno, that is how I feel.

I did not really get a different result because both times by day 2 I had 4 and 5 embies but by the time they transfered I only had 2.

Its so disappointing not to have frosties as its more costly and invasive not to do FET. I think high dose menopur maybe on short protocol may be an option for me. I will discuss it with my cons.

Yesterday at the clinic I found out the difference between Menopur and GonalF.

Menopur comes from purified menopausal women's urine (yuck!) and the actual hormone amount is not accurate. There is a margin of error so if it says 75ui it might be 50 ui. Menopur is cheaper. It cost £13 per ampule for the clinics. NHS clinics tend to use this drug (because it's cheaper).

Gonal F is the synthesic vesrion of the hormone and the concentration of it is very accurate. The downside is that it's more expensive, £25 per ampule for the clinics.

Hope this is useful.

Isn't the LH content in menopur also higher than gonalf (hence better for older women).

Gonal F vs Menopur?

Hi there,

Anyone know the difference between gonal F and menopur?

Last cycle I was on 3 amps menopur long protocol and got 12 eggs but suffered from both early and severe late ohss, this time I am on 150 of gonal F on short protocol.

I just don't know what the difference is between the two drugs?

Hi,

Just thought I'd add my little bit to this thread.

I've had two cycles and used both Gonal f and Menopur.

During my Gonal F cycle I was started on quite a low dosage as at risk of OHSS. I ended up with 11 eggs, 10 of which were mature enough to use in ICSI. On my second cycle I used Menopur and got 16 eggs but agin only 10 of those were mature enough to use for ICSI. We have paid for both of our cycles and therefore know that Gonal F was more expensive, however, I dodn't use the pens and found the Gonal F much easier to prepare and administer than the Menopur.

Hope some of this helps. x
