100 people needed to send 1 letter each to Oxfordshire PCT to end their discriminative policies

Hey people...

I have written a letter to protest Oxfordshire PCT's current policies regarding access to treatment for people that need IVF.

I want to get at least 100 of these letters sent out by 17th April 2009, so please let me know if you are sending one so that I can keep tabs of numbers

If you would like a copy to send I have pasted it at the bottom of this post.

Letters from those of you in Oxfordshire would have more impact, however letters from all over the country would raise awareness.

Please also forward your letter to your local MP, Prime Minister Brown and the local media such as the Oxford Mail and the Oxford Times.

The address of your MP is the same for everyone, you just need to make sure that you change their name.

[Your MP's Name]
House of Commons
London

The address for Prime Minister Brown is;

Prime Minister Brown
10 Downing Street
London

And the Oxford Mail and Oxford Times can be reached at;

Newsquest Oxfordshire
Osney Mead
Oxford
Oxfordshire
OX2 0EJ

Please, please, please get friends, family, collegues and whoever else you can think of to print this letter out and send it to Andrea Young the Oxfordshire PCT's Chief Executive.

I am just one voice, but will all you guys involed we really could make a change! :D

Here is the letter;

Re: Oxfordshire PCT’s policies in regards to IVF

Dear Andrea Young,

I am writing to you today to express my disappointment in Oxfordshire Primary Care Trusts current policies in not following the complete set of guidelines set out by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence in regard to IVF treatment offered to Oxfordshire Residents.

The NICE guidelines clearly state that;

“Couples in which the woman is aged 23–39 years at the time of treatment and who have an identified cause for their fertility problems (such as azoospermia or bilateral tubal occlusion) or who have infertility of at least 3 years’ duration should be offered up to three stimulated cycles of in vitro fertilization treatment.”

It is my belief that your current policies regarding access to treatment make a mockery of these guidelines and the NICE.

I call on you now to change Oxfordshire PCT’s policies with regards to funding IVF to bring them inline with NICE guidelines immediately. And will also call on my MP and the Government to make this mandatory not just for Oxfordshire PCT, but for all PCT’s in the United Kingdom.

Your organisations discriminative policies have no place in a modern society where everyone should be entitled to equality regardless of their place of residence, age, sex, marital and family status.

I look forward to hearing from you and to a resolution of this matter. I will follow this up with you after 14 days if I have not received a reply. Please contact me at the above address.

Yours sincerely

That will really help to raise awareness - I think getting the local papers and goverment involed will really make a massive impact!

Hi Richard,

I have sent a letter but have also fwd to friends and family so will let you know how many.

I have heard to day that they will probably reduce the age to 34 in May but they are unlikely to change any other criteria.

sheffield and leeds pct only offer one cycle too, is there another reason oxfordshire have been singled out? are they particularly bad?

The link was originally in the Oxford link.
They offer only one cycle and that is if you are over 35 and neither partner has a child.

I think there are lots of petitions on here for different PCT and I am happy to sign any of them due to the inbalance of treatment across the UK.

Hi BraveGirl,

No reason for oxford other than it is my local PCT.

Why not use the letter to write to your own PCT in Sheffield and Leeds?

In fact I was thinking that after we get a 100 letters together for Oxford then I will create a list naming and shaming all those PCT's that dont follow NICE guidelines - this way we can lobby each one in turn and get them all to know our thoughts on this matter.

Cheers.

Right alll...

I know of only 17 letters that have certainly been sent already...

We need many more to influence the PCT, the media, our MP's and the goverment to take action on this.

We need to get everyone we know to write letters as soon as possible to have the biggest impact that we can achieve.

The 'ball' at present is well and truely 'in our court' and we must fight for the NICE guildelines here in Oxfordshire.

If any of you are members on other forums, please do post my original post there and ask for people to take action.

Also the people that have already confirmed that they have sent letters, can you confirm that you have also sent copies to your local newspaper, your MP and Prime Minister Brown as well as Andrea Young?

Cheers to all...

Thanks for the support TigerLilly,

I will let you know how it went.

I am still trying to email and messenger friends to sign the petition so it looks full when it gets published in the paper. If it only had 30 odd signatures it will look a little bleak :P

Wow - you're a SuperStar!

I would think that they would have more impact sent seperately. Are you forwarding them to the local media and MP's too?

If so, the copies you could send via email. If you want the emails for the local media then check out 'The Wall' at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=72785000727

Just picked up a copy of this weeks Oxford Journal while in Oxford. The petition is their front page story!!! :D

Richard

I have campaigned strongly for this but I was really dissapointed when I read the article in todays paper.

The emphasis is on age being reduced and not on all of the other factors. Although it mentions previous children it implies they would be from the couple rather than a previous partner.

I am now 34 and if they reduce the age to 30 - 34 it will mean that no matter how hard I campaign I will soon be too old.

I do completely agree with what you are doing and understand why but this is not going to help me and I need to focus on what benefits me and not what is in fact going to make it even harder!

Hi TigerLilly,

Would you like to put your side to the media as well? If so I will be more than happy to help.

On the facebook page I posted contact details for the reporter who wrote the article. And I sent an email round to all the people that signed too to contact her if they had a story to tell.

Have you read the full article in the print edition of the paper or just the one online?

TigerLilly,

I have been thinking. You're right. The Campaign should be pushing for couples in your situation more.

Contact me over the weekend and I will speak to the press about it on Monday. I will also bring it up with the at our next meeting.

Just to let you know I did actually bring it up yesterday at the meeting, but received a negative response from their representitive.

I really will do my best for you and others in your situation.

Hi Richard,

Sorry I must have sounded a real grouch!
I just feel my time is now running out and rather than panic I need to make sure I am doing something positive for me.

I think you are doing a fantastic job and will continue to support and help where ever possible.

I'm not brave enough to speak to the newspaper about my case unless it was anonymously. I received a letter this morning from the PCT saying they would not consider my appeal

Who is it you are meeting with?
I have only read the online article so I will by the paper in a min.
