Still have pregnancy hormones!

Dunno if this is in the best/right place to get a reply here but here goes:

When I had my blood test at day 15, despite a negative home pregnancy test on day 14, I had pregnancy hormone in my blood. The levels were 12 - sorry I have no idea what it is they're measuring ?HCg?

Anyway, I had to go back a week later to check that they had gone back to 2 (non-pregnant levels) but they've gone up to 57!

I'm somewhat disappointed that the nurse was unable to explain what this might mean and she just told me to come back next week for a further test. I'm worried that I'll have to have another procedure (had to have a d&c last year for a missed miscarriage). I have had a bleed but it was fairly light. I'll call them tomorrow and ask again but wondered if anyone here had any experience of this?

TIA

I'm sorry Roxy. It's good that they are testing you and keeping an eye. The nurse maybe doesn't know. Can you try to speak to a doctor?

Hi Roxy
I'm no expert on this I'm afraid, but I think I have heard of similar cases on here, and so hopefully somebody might pop along later to share their experience.

I do know that, unfortunately with this discrepancies, it is often a case of having to "wait and see" with regular tests etc. Your clinic do seem to have this in hand.
You didn't mention whether you'd got your AF yet?
Take care hun

Hi Roxy!

With an HCG test result of 57 you are likely to get a +ve HPT as most of them have a threshold of 25. However, if your HCG levels are not rising as expected (they like to see them double every 48 hours) then unfortunately, as I'm sure they explained, it isn't a good sign.

Rising HCG levels, but not rising as expected, can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy. But please don't panic - your clinic are monitoring you closely.
Unfortunately, they probably can;t tell you exactly what is going on at the moment, hence they will keep taking bloods to see what happens to those levels. If I was you, for now, put any worries about a further D&C, etc, out of your mind and ask you clinic to explain things to you in more detail.

Did you manage to speak to anyone again?

Oh Roxy, I am so sorry you are going through this.
Try to not worry about a d&c at this stage, it is very early.
I was in a little bit of similar situation last year - my betas were low and where being monitoring to make sure they fell to non-pregnant levels, but they spiked upwards. I drove myself crazy worrying about ectopics and needing another d&c.

Although your beta has risen, it is still very low. Although no-one can rule out an ectopic or needing a d&c, it seems unlikely given your low betas (to me at least). So please try not to worry, but do get yourself to a doctor if you develop any pain.

Hopefully, your light bleed yesterday has developed into a full blown AF by now. You'll need to go back in a week to confirm that your betas did eventually fall to non-pregnant. Sometimes it just takes a while.

Please let us know how you are doing,

Thanks for your replies. You are better informed than the nurse who I spoke to initially! I've now spoken to another more seniour nurse and she said it could be an ectopic, but she thinks unlikely. It's still a bit of a worry but, as you've said, they are monitoring me and I've no symptoms so I'm hoping that when I go back in a week they will be more normal.

Grrr! Annoyingly, my pregnancy hormones are still going up and were 222 today! I've had a couple of bleeds and was so hopeful that that indicated things were getting back to normal. I've got to go back to the ACU next weeks for yet another blood test, though I've no symptoms of ectopic still, just a very dull ache around my lower abdomen. It's all very tedious.

Friday, March 20th 2009, 8:00pm

I went back for more blood tests today and whilst I was there asked for a scan, which I had. The sonographer thought she could see something that was probably a sac in my uterus so I was feeling positive that it's not an ectopic, rather an early loss/biochem pregnancy, and my bloods would show my hcg going down.

When I called for the results: nightmare - they are now 555!!! I asked if despite this I could be confident that I was not experiencing an ectopic given what we'd seen on the ultrsound earlier but the hurse just kept repeating "we cannot rule out ectopic".

I'm so fed up. I have no symptoms of ectopic but am feeling all over the place emotionally, quiet tearful and anxious. I'm going back next week for yet another blood test, I'm now 5 weeks past EC.

Has anyone any thoughts on this? My friend who's had an ectopic can't understand why they haven't performed a laproscopy on my by now to see what's going on

Hi Roxy
I'm no doctor so I can only share my own experience which unfortunately doesn't have a happy ending but might help a bit but bear with me cos it will be a bit of a long post!

On my last cycle I started to bleed on test day but also got a positive test. I bled for about a week quite heavily so presumed it was all over but a week later I was still testing positive on an HPT. When they done my bloods my HCG was rising but not at the correct levels. They then scanned me once I'd got to what would be about 5 weeks to make sure it wasn't ectopic and could see a tiny sac so they concluded that although the embie had implanted and was trying to grow nothing would come of it and I would miscarry within about a week.

After about three weeks I started to get a bit worried that I hadn't had a bleed so they called me back in and when they scanned me again they found that the embie had continued to develop but at a much slower rate than expected (it took 10 weeks to get to 7 week size) and there was no heartbeat. I did finally miscarry about a week after that but they think that basically it was always going to be a non-viable pregnancy but my body tried desperately hard to get it going.

I'm sorry you're going through this, it's absolutely rotten and I don't know about you but I felt a bit abandoned by my clinic and a bit lonely not really knowing what was going on.

so sorry to hear that you are still being put through so much anxiety.

I can imagine it is really hard. Other than the nurse, has anyone else, e.g. a consultant, spoken to you? I really think you should be getting more explanations from someone there as to what they think is going on and what the possible outcomes and treatments are.

i too think they need to do something about this now

ive been through something similiar and ended up at epu back and forwards for ages and then back to clinic at what would have been 9 weeks pregnant for a methotrexate jab

surgery is always a last resort

the sac they could be seeing now could be what they call a pseudo sac caused from an ectopic, this is possible what they saw with me hence how i know

i think you need to demand something get down now, tell them you are not coping. usually you will not see anything on U/S until hcg levels are at 1000

if you feel you are not getting answers or help from your clinic either see your gp or epu unit and explain the situation

i am so very sorry you are going through this

Thanks for your replies ladies. It's so helpful to hear of others' experiences. I was wondering if I needed to be a bit more assertive about the treatment I have been receiving. So I called the ACU and they had me back at a moment's notice for another blood test and scan. They looked for fluid which they say is another sign of ectopic and there is none. The "sac" they could see yesterday is no longer. They say it looks as though my lining is starting to break down and they are expecting me to have a bleed imminently.

I can go back on Monday for a further blood test if I'm still anxious as well as the scheduled Friday.

Footsie, I can really empathise with your feelings. I was feeling quite lost and confused. Fortunately, I feel like my anxieties have been alleviated for now and I just hope that I do start bleeding and my levels will go down in the next few days.

My bloods are down slightly now at 487. I hope it's a trend but I've been referred to the EPU for tests on my beta level on Monday - stupidly I didn't ask what that meant (why do the medics speak in jargon?).

Thanks.

Well, I was admitted to the Early Pregnancy Asessment Unit yesterday with sharp npains in my lower abdomen and treated for an ectopic with methtrexate.

I feel a lot better already and hopefully it will mean I avoid surgery.

Can't have my FET for 3 months now unfortunately but c'est la vie!

God this stuff is so complicated!
