LA v agency?

Hi Ladies,

I am in need of your advice (again).

DH and I are almost certain that adoption is the way forward for us,. We have our first information meeting with the international adoption people in early Jan. My question is, do I have to go through my local authority or can I go through a private agency? If yes, what are your opinions on the best way forward? By the way, we are considering adopting from Thailand, not sure if that makes any difference.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and Merry Christmas.

Sarah.xxx

Hi Sarah

When we were deciding to go through adoption , we went to LAs open evening and also spoke to 2 VAs. Our decision was swung on the basis of how they dealt with us on a personal basis. we were looking however at Uk adoption.

Now I dont know if our VA actually processes applicants who are looking for intl adoption . it might be worth literally asking the question .
A tip from myself having been very frustrated by just being accepted onto a milaing list , send lots of emails and make numerous phone calls.

SWs and associates are extremely busy most of the time so being persistant is sometimes what is needed ...gently.

Good luck

Hi Sarah

We have recently been to our LA four day introduction into Adoption and they covered international adoption, they did say that not all LA have someone dealing with International adoption but they do get other LA close to them to work with them that do specialise in this.

Intenational adoption looked very expensive but there were some lovely successful storis that we heard. As Marlene says make some calls and emails the SW's are usually so very freindly and will give you al the information you need to help you, also Adoption agencies will help too

I wish you and DH all the very best fr your new journey and look forward to following you all the way

Thanks girls,

I realise that the cost of adopting internationally is considerably more, but that doesn't bother us at the moment. We are used to paying out extrame amounts of money for IVF treatment!!!

I have done some research (some more) and have discovered that agencies are not permitted to act on behalf for international adoption, you have to go through your LA. Not sure how acurate this information is though.

I have decided to attend the meeting and take with me a list of questions, hopefully then I will get the answers from the horses mouth.

Thanks again ladies,

Wishing you a very happy and lucky new year. Let's hope it's the start of something really special.!!xxx

As Marlene said we aplied to a number of both VA and LA's and then decided to go with the one we felt most at ease with and who we felt suited us as individuals.
