Folic Acid?

Hi Guys,
My Consultant told me i should start taking folic acid. I have bought it today but i also bought some multi vitamins and they contain folican, does anyone know if i should take these aswell as folic acid cos i'm not sure if you can take to much?

I start dr on the 27th Jan and have been told that EC should be at the beginning of March.
Also is there a particular make of Folic acid or is any brand ok?

Thanks All.

HI and welcome to the site. I hope you find it lots of help to have lots of answers at your fingertips!

I don't think it will matter if you take folic acid in a multi vit or on it's own. I don't think you can overdose on it either, so as long as you are taking it one way or the other you will be fine. I take mine in a Pregnacare multi vit, as it's one less tablet to take separately. There isn't any particular brand that is better though. Holland and Barrat are good as they tend to be cheaper than places like Boots, and their own brand stuff is as good as any.

I hope you have a successful cycle anyway. good luck!

:hi: Angel

Like Mrs Smiff my folic acid is part of a multi vit (ImmunACE)....it has 500ug of Folacin (Folic acid) which is 250% of the RDA so if my maths is right the RDA is 200ug. My clinic recommend 400ug daily.

Hope this helps!

:goodluck: for your forthcoming treatment!!

It might be worth switching to another multivitamin further into your treatment since too much vitamin A can be dangerous in pregnancy

Hmmm... The general recommendation for folic acid when TTC and in early pg is 400-500mcg (200-250% of the RDA according to Duffymoon's medication bottle) and that (400) is what the multivit I took when TTC contained. It was also a multivit recommended by my clinic as it had the correct dosages of all the vits and minerals.
When I got my BFP I was instructed to continue using that multivit but also to take a further 5mg (5000mcg - making the total 5400mcg or 2700% of the RDA) up to 16 weeks then continue just the multi.

I can't believe your clinic didn't advise you to start taking folic acid! It has been proven that folic acid greatly reduces neural tube defects such as spina bifida in babies. It's not too late to start taking it, and it should be taken until the 12th week of pregnancy at least, as this is when the neural tube is completely developed and becomes enclosed. Get a good multi vitamin from boots or Holland and Barret. Pregnacare is a good one as it is designed for women before during and after conception. Good luck with your cycle!

folic acid

Hi girls

Just an update for those who don't know me

TTC 18 months, found out in Nov 2007 that Tiger(DH) has azoospermia
Biopsy on 15/5/08 - sperm found

I guess the next step is going to be ICSI

Should I start taking folic acid??? My sister was born with spina bifida so my family and I are, of course, very anxious and want to be as proactive as possible to lessen the risks and I want to be as healthy as possible

So any other tips??

Thankyou in advance

It would be a top idea to start taking folic acid as soon as possible. Also, it might be an idea to ask your doc whether you should be taking high dose folic acid given your family history.

Women are recommended to start taking folic acid at least 3 months before trying to conceive, and for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you don't know when your ICSI treatment will be, then I'd start taking it asap if I were you. It can't do any harm anyway. Good luck with it all!

Hi, Cazzie - you should be taking a good pre-natal vitamin for 3 months before you have any treatment - if you take it for longer then that is okay too. Most pre-natal vitamins include about 400mcg of folic acid. Since you have a family history of someone with SB they may advise you to increase the dose of folic acid even further once you are PG and you should continue taking folic for at least 12 weeks into PG but 16-19 weeks if you can
I had 400mcg a day for a bit over a year before my BFP and on confirmation of same the doctor instructed me to take a further 5mg (5000mcg) each day just to be safe and I stopped the 5mg after the AFP test was done at 19 weeks as by then it would have done what it needed to do...

Cazzie, one of my friends who has a family histoty of spina bifida was advised to take 5mg folic acid a day as there is direct link between spina bifida and lack of folic acid. You dont get this from pharmacy, as you need a prescription for this. Hope this helps.

It would be a good idea to discuss this with your GP as I have to take 5mg daily as I am on medication for epilepsy. This can cause neural tube defects (such as spina bifida) but the 5mg helps to reduce this risk.
I am sure a family history will be the same. You need to get it prescribed though as it's not available over the counter. I have been taking it since TTC.
Hope this helps

Folic Acid & Zinc

Whilst we went food shopping last night, I needed some more Iron Tablets (i'm anaemic) . . And then I thought, Ooooo Folic Acid whilst i'm here.

So, I got some folic acid, but whats the right MG-age to take?

Also, I pointed out Zinc capsules to the DB (because he won't eat veg etc) . . And said they help your swimmers be stronger, so he grabbed a capsule of Zinc haha, & took one this morning :O :snigger: "impressed""

For most women the dose is 400 micrograms (0.4 mg) of folic acid a day. They recommend taking it for at least 3 months before you TTC.

Hi,

I know that Boots do a pack of about 6 or 8 wks-worth of tablets with the correct dosage as Polly Pocket has said above - I think it has something like 'for pregnancy' on the pack.

As it's their own brand, the price is good too!

Hi,
Tesco also do a folic acid tablet at the 400 microgram dose. I think there are about 90 tablets per bottle. You can find them in the vitamins area of most reasonably sized Tesco. If one supermarket does this, I suspect others would too.

Hi Bethany,

If you took a second it wouldn't do you any harm at all, any excess would be excreted in your urine.

If you consistently took high doses of more than 1000micrograms for a long period of time is when you could experience health issues - so you don't have anything to worry about.
