The Use of DHEA in Poor Responder Patients

The Use of DHEA in Poor Responder Patients

Mrs Janet Evans is carrying out a study on women with infertility who have resistant ovaries which do not respond well to the drug stimulation required to obtain eggs for In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). There is some evidence from the USA that a drug called DHEA can improve the response of the ovaries in this situation and help them to make good quality eggs, thus improving the success of these treatments.

this is a statement from my clinic...just thought it may well me interesting to some of you

This is really interesting but is also confusing at the same time.

I had an FSH level of 15.9, was told that I'm having an early menopause. We gave IVF a go, short protocol with max dose of menopur, I didn't respond to the drugs and the cycle was abandoned. We were told to consider egg donation or adoption.

I know I read too much on the internet but keep finding evidence of people with high FSH levels with poor response rate trying again and succeeding.

I've also seen some mention of this DHEA.

I'm just wondering whether it's worth asking for a second opinion now !!! Ahhh. I'm already 40 and don't want to waste any more time.

Is there anyone else out there who is having an early menopause with a high FSH that has a success story ?

My head really is all over the place at the mo !

Just did a search on dhea and this came up!
My consultant has just told me to take 75mg of dhea for a couple of months or so to try and get a few more eggs. I have had 2 goes at IVF, one with 300 of menopur and one with 600. I only produced 2 or 3 follies each time (same as on clomid 50mg!) so converted to IUI. I am still having a AMH test to see what I have left in terms of eggs, but he said there has been a lot of work done in US with dhea and I certainly feel its worth a shot!
Has anyone else out there tried this?

Thanks Kara, I am definately going to read up on this as I am a poor responder and if there is any way that I may be able to improve my response and egg quality then it has got to be worth a try - is dhea different from dha that Zita West reccommends?

Thanks for this post Kara

AS far as I'm aware my FSH levels were ok (only coz noone ever mentioned they weren't!) but I was definitely a poor responder and only produced 4 eggs last time out of 6 follies.

I shall defo be looking a bit more closely into the DHEA, as I've read quite a bit on it already.

time to take action...especially with a round 2 coming up in the enxt couple of months.

Thanks again!

Hi Chatterbox and Clarabella
I think its definitely worth looking into. I hadnt even heard of DHEA before but at my follow up consultation after 2 IVFs where I'd had a poor response (my fsh has been 9.4, 8.2, 9.5 - so not bad for my age), my consultant suggested it.
I dont think I would have tried it without him suggesting it - he is one of the most senior cons at the clinic and is quite forward thinking. The research comes from the US mainly and as far as I'm concened anything that might give me a better chance has got to worth a try!
You cant get it in the shops, but have to order it from the internet. I'd check with your consultants first as it might not be recommended for everyone.
Good luck - please let me know if anyone gets any results from this.

Hello Paris
Congratulations to you! I am seeing someone about starting acupuncture tomorrow. If you don't mind me asking, how much of a poor responder were you, and did you find out you had a low reserve from having the AMH blood test? I am quite nervous about getting the results of this test, but seeing other people get BFPs when they have been poor responders/low reserve is really encouraging.
We couldnt afford to go down the donor route and I am not sure I'd want to do that, so I'm praying I have still got some viable eggs left in me.

Does anyone know how low low is with ovarian reserve? Do they give you a figure or just say its low?
Any info gratefully received!

Hi Dizzy, yep i had the test and it showed a low reserve, my FSH was not that high but the two combined showed i had a problem, when i did my first natural cycle the egg did not fertilise, the doctor described it to me as imagine someone driving a car with there foot down on the accelerator and that is what my body was doing, so basically my eggs were growing to quickly, i think by about day 7 it was the right size for collection, bit like a hard boiled egg really, so the 2nd natural cycle i had the month before on day 20 i took a drug called provammes, this slowed my body down, and my egg grew at the right speed etc and fertilised, unf did not implant, 3rd natural the egg released itself minutes before collection, after that i went on to a stimulated cycle and was on menupur at first, did not respond to 3 cycles so had IUIs instead, my doc then changed me onto gonal F 300 IuI, this i seemed to respond to better, and instead of my normal 2-3 eggs i produced 6, which for me was amazing, i had also started acupuncture abour 2 months prev, i had a further IVF were i had 6 eggs again, unfor they did not implant, this was last December, we decided to try one final IVF before going down the donor egg route, i had acupuncture twice a week in January then moved to once a week in feb, i found out end feb before i started my last IVF that i was pregnant. totally shocked and very happy, sorry if this is a bit of a ramble, but hope it helps. x

Wow Paris - what a lot you have been through! I am so very very pleased you got your BFP in the end - it gives hope to us all. Thanks for sharing your experience. If IVF still looks viable, I might ask about gonal f, as menopur is what Ive been on and not responded - only 2-3 eggs. Hope you have a happy healthy pregnancy!
I shall report back on whether the DHEA has had any effect in a couple of months.
Bravegirl - good luck, not long til testing now!

Paris, I'm so glad you've posted your story. It's gives us low responders so much hope!!!

I'm pretty much the same and I started acupuncture once a week in February. Since then I've just had my first bfp, which I lost pretty much straight away, but I'm sure the acu had something to do with it. I've had nothing in nearly 3 years! So I'm a lot more hopeful than I was.

Congrats on your bfp!
