PREDNISOLONE QUESTIONS

Hello

I am having FET next week and have been given prednisolone (steroids) to take as blood tests show i have slightly raised nk cells. 5mg 3xdaily is the initial dose increasing if i have a bfp. Has anyone ever taken this and did you get any of the horrendous side effects that are listed? Was just wondering what to expect.

Thanks xx

Hey there, who diagnosed this? I saw Dr Shehata and he did a simple blood test and diagnosed high NK cells, yet when i had it done properly at ARGC (they send it off to the USA) i only had slightly raised NK cells.

I went on prednisolone on the same protocol as you and got a BFN (i have PCOS and was on metformin, prednisolone stops the metformin from working which was why i got a bfn), on my next cycle i didnt take it until i got a BFP and i will be really honest and say i felt like absolute crap on them after 3 weeks, i m/c and had to slowly reduce the dose and that was the worst time ever, i couldnt even climb the stairs!
I did recover very quickly and within the space of stopping the steroids and had no lasting effects. I also had no side effects whilst on them it was only when stopping.

My advise would be to take them as early in the morning as possible, if you take them later in the day they may keep you awake!

Good luck

Thanks spangle for your reply.
I had the bloods done at Holly House, along with some others which were all negative. I have looked at Dr Shehata and ARGC for the 'Chicago tests' but have taken my cons advice to try just prednisolone with my frosties. If this doesn't work then i'll have to think again and maybe go to ARGC and try IVIG with a fresh cycle, Holly House don't do it. Tbh though i'm a bit scared about trying that!
Took my first prednisolone today along with Progynova, Aspirin and Cyclogest so am expecting to feel pretty crap soon, et is on Thursday if the frosties survive, i've got 3 blasties.

One more thing, sorry, i've got to take the prednisolone 3x day so if i take them at 7.30am 1.30pm 6.30pm do you think they'll keep me awake at night? I've got to work so really need to be sleeping!!

Thanks again for you help x

Hi Spangle and Jess

Just reading your posts, do you know what your actual readings were for the NK Cells?

I have had mine done and they have measured CD 69, Just wondered what Mr Shehata considered high. I know it varies from consultant to consultant.

Jess, all i can suggest is you try them and see how you get on and if they are interfering with your sleep then change the times, like i say i didnt have any side effects until i tried to stop them

Stacey, if i am really honest i really hold no wait in any NK cells test other than the one that is done in ARGC as NK cells in the blood stream differ from what how they are tested for in the usa.
(KSKI is the man to ask as i really cant remember how they test them but all i know is that it is related to how they attack the embryo)

Tests that are not done this way dont really mean much (Dr shehata said i had high NK cells and the ARGC test just said i had borderline high hence why i only needed humira and not ivig)

Hope this helps

Hi Stacy

I had lupus, anti-cardiolipin, anti-phospholipid antibodies, NK and a few other tests, cant remember them all off hand.
All tests and nk levels were normal apart from three nk's : CD56, CD19 and CD16.

My CD56 level was 17% (normal range 1-28 anything over 12% considered high)
My CD19 level was 13.6% (normal range 5-20 " " " " )
My CD16 level was 16.8% (normal range 6-27 " " " " )

As you can see they aren't massively raised but my cons say's even slightly makes a difference with some women, and anythings worth a try, hey?

I don't know anyone else who's had these done and would be interested to know other peoples levels.
Hope this helps x

Hi Kar,

Lucky lucky you!!. When did you start taking them? - It normally taked up to a week for all side effects to manifest themselves.

I would definitely say increased hunger is caused by the steroids. I was on 25mg per day and other ones that I had ( and I think are fairly typical) were:

Bloating especially of face and abdomen.
Facial hair (goes very well with the moon face ?()
More energy. I used to take them in the morning and they used to counteract the pregnany tiredness
Sleplessness or broken sleep.

Once you stop taking them, the symptoms should subside fairly quickly, although i still have the porky abdomen and facial hair 6 weeks later. I do think though this could be because my hormones are all over the place still.

Good luck with the 2ww - remember you might be lucky and get none of the above, a friend of mine was on the same doseage and didn't have any side effects. But even if you do, remembr its for a good cause :D

I never had the sore throat but a thought - are you dehydrated? You should drink extra water when taking steroids as they can cause dehydration.

If you'r only taking them since Wed, its early to get symptoms but still possible. It does normally take about 7 days.

Best of luck.

I took 0.5 dexamethasone (which I think is equivalent to 25mg prednisolone) for 2 months. The only side effect I had was the facial hair - which would not have been my top choice if I got to choose a side effect!
When coming off them, I took the dex on alternate days for one week before stopping completely. During my dex-free days, I was lethargic and had headaches.

:O Oops, sorry, much lower
Dex is 5 times more potent (roughly) than pred, making my dose of 0.5mg equivalent to a measly 2.5mg of pred. So if I got a beard.... !

I really hope it works Kara, a super dose of steroids certainly sounds good to me (you can be waxed before your you pose in all those baby photos :D)

Dexamethasone steroids. Side affects?

Hi All,
Has anyone taken dexamethasone steroids during their stimulation phase?
I am on 1mg a day. I have been told that they have side affects. Any info?

This might make you smile (or run for the hills!):

prednisolone side effects

Your dose of steroid is relatively low... Although steroids do have lots of common side effects, to be honest, I found the emotional fall out of IVF far more taxing than any of side effects I got from the drugs.

I got bloated towards the end of stims (they got 24 eggs from me... :8o:). And I pretty much stayed bloated, the bloat turned into a bump.

It's hard to say how much the steroids contributed to the bloat really...

8 follicles is a great start!
I got 8 eggs from my previous cycle, so you can imagine my shock...
I was actually very worried that the quantity would reduce the quality, but it didn't seem to.

Mr T says not to get hung up on numbers. He doesn't, so why should you? They will do their utmost to get the most perfect, mature eggs from you. They will nurture the resulting embies, and then transfer the very best back to you. Mr T personally does every transfer. It might be the only time you see him during stims, but it is a critical time.

Take one day at a time Sooz.

prednisolone

hello!
I am taking prednisolone. I have been reading around in the forums and I have been reading that it is to do with immune issues. Now most people seem to take it from e/t. How come I'm taking it from now (start of stimming)? Also My dose will go up from 10mg to 30mg just before e/c? Maybe it's just a different protocol? Sorry I'm just being nosy as I'm not sure I understand what it is for as I haven't done any special blood tests.
If you know can you tell me?
Thanks babydust

Hi Maria,
(So delighted you are stimming :-)
For steroids, every clinic seems to be a bit different. Some clinics prefer a short course of high dose of steroids for a week or so, whereas others prefer a smaller dose given over a couple of months.
I don't think anyone really knows how steroids are meant to help, but the way I think of it is that they dampen down your immune system so that you are more accepting to an implanting embryo. That's probably why they are increasing your dose before EC, to make sure your immune system is nice and quiet by the time you get to embie transfer.
I hope that helps!
