Useful Info for Payment Abroad

Hi all

Further to my post about how to pay in cash for tx abroad (IM, Barcelona give a discount, assume that other Spanish clinics may also?), I've discovered that it is possible to open a bank account with the Halifax in Spain.

My DH rang the number on their website - just google 'Halifax in Spain' - and they are going to send us out an application form. All we need to do is present ourself to a Halifax branch over here for ID purposes and that's it. It is also free to transfer funds between English and Spanish Halifax accounts.

Apparently, they just need 48 hours notice in Spain if you are needing to withdraw large sums of cash.

Assume the have branches in many of the bigger cities in Spain, certainly there is one that is easy to get to in Barcelona.

Just thought I would share this in case it is useful to anyone else.

Love Gracie

RE: Useful Info for Payment Abroad

Hi Gracie

I have a first appointment at IM on 12 August so would be really interested to hear how it goes for you.

We are looking at the cash payment option as well - the 3% saving will at least cover some of the travel costs! I think we will just take the cash with us and look after it very carefully!

Wishing you the best of luck with your first appointment!

Yes it's good to see all their doctors - although I don't know which one we are seeing.

I'm feeling very impatient now and just want to get on with it!

Hi Gracie

Firstly how did it go yesterday? Secondly, I am not sure if you have already sorted it, but I have a friend who works for a foreign exchange company (he works in spain, but they do have offices here too) who's specific business is making money transfers between currencies easier. They have set up a facility for me and then I can transfer money as and when I need it... without having to pay huge bank fees and commissions (btw - I have been advised to wait as long as possible as the £ is strengthening against the € daily). They are called currencies direct and are at www.currenciesdirect.com - just thought it might help - I am saving about £250 on €6,500

Hope this helps hun xx

Hi Abby

Thanks for the heads up, however, I need to be able to withdraw the actual cash to pay the clinic with, can I do this do you know? This is the only way the clinic will give us discount, it's only 3% but it works out to several hundred pounds off the bill which is why we are trying to sort this out!

Appointment was great, have updated my diary. Glad you got on well too, will pop by your diary later.

Sunny - I've PM'd you as you've not made enough posts to get into the diary pages yet.

Love Gracie

Thanks Gracie for the update and Abby for your suggestion.

I've been looking at exchange rates with different companies on the internet and have found a couple of companies where if I order Euros well in advance I can get a much better rate.

With the treatment at IM costing nearly 10,000 Euros, a few extra pence per pound can make a big difference!

After my first visit I will hopefully have a rough idea of when the transfer might be and will order the currency - although as Abby said, the pound looks like it is rising a little against the Euro, so not sure how much I will save in the end, but worth a try anyway!

RE: Useful Info for Payment Abroad

Hi everyone,

My husband runs a company for patients travelling abroad for treatment specifically Madrid and Athens providing a flight search/booking and accommodation search/booking service. He also provides an FX currency service where you will get a better rate of exchange than the high street. He has been running this service for over 5 years.

I previously worked at an IVF centre on the Costa del Sol that insisted on being paid in Cash and did not give any discount for doing so. You also have the worry of having to carry a latge amount of money with you.

There are certain institutions that supposedly have links with the UK, but please be aware that they are SL companies and are nothing to do with their advertised counterparts. Santender are owned by Abbey, but just try and get favourable rates or even try to get euros for pounds in large amounts and you will appreciate the difficulties. Previous clients have tried and been told that they could only exchange something like 400 euros per day. FX companies are your best option.

The company that we use does not charge any commission and rates will be higher than on the high street.

If you need any help please email my husband simon on info@ivftravelsolutions.com

Regards

Ruth
