PGD success rates.

Dear everyone, My good friend has been told that she needs to have PGD. She has the finances to go anywhere in the world to do this (lucky for some) :-) and has chosen to go to New York. They advised her that success rates for IVF PGD is better than standard IVF and their success rate per embryo transfer is 70%. Is this normal? Can it be true? Am just trying to protect her! It seems a lot to me. They also advised that they can implant 3 eggs but will need to remove one pregnancy if she becomes pregnant with triplets. This all seems a bit space age to me so thought i would check with you girls. I would appreciate any advice you might have for her. She is 33 years old and has no children yet. Kind regards, laura

Hi Laura, I do not know the actual success rates, obviously they depend on age and any fertility issues.
However, I am really surprised that your friend has chosen to go to the USA when there are some brillinant places in the UK for PGD. Is she based in London like you? Wouldn't it be easier (and cheaper) if she looked at her options in London if she is? There are Guy's (the biggest PGD centre in the UK and I recommend them), UCL and The Bridge (a private clinic). Guy's and UCL are both research centres too.
70% seems a very high rate of success to me, and wonderful if that is true.
I wish your friend all the best (and she can come on here and chat to us if she likes) with her cycle wherever she ends up doing it. x

After 5 years of endo surgery, clomid, 2 x MM/C, 2 x ICSI cycles and 1 PGD cycle,
beautiful twin girls born 8th Feb 2010, we are so grateful

RE: PGD success rates.

Hi Laura,

I work with a clinic in Madrid that does PGD if your friend was interested. I am a fertility nurse specialist and have been since 1992. Always happy to call or email with general advice or any queries anyone might have especially as I have worked at a centre on the Costa del Sol for the past 5 years where couples from the UK and the US were coming for treatment.

70% sounds very high for success rate. Your friend should find out if that was testing positive or clinical pregnancy, i.e. heartbeat seen at 12 weeks. Some clinics like to advertise the high figures when it is not a true reflection of the treatment outcome.

Delighted to help in any way.

Ruth
