GCRM or abroad for next go ? Anyone any experience of either ? Feeling lost

Hi all

Just finished 1st failed ICSI cycle with Gcrm in August and starting to think about what to do next . GCRM in their not very helpful review appointment recommended Access fertility but financially this just isn't an option for us . So our options are : same protocol over again in Gcrm (no using access so overall cost of around 5.5k again) and hope for different results this time (we have no Frosties - only had one fertilised out of 6 good eggs :( ...)- or travel abroad for treatment - so far been looking at Spain (not the cheapest but impressive) Poland or Prague .

Logistics and limited annual leave means I would obviously rather stay at home and do another cycle but I think I have just lost faith in gcrm a bit after having review appointment where the doc didn't really know our case and didn't really give us much hope. They will just do exact same thing all over again which makes me think it's going to fail anyway so what's the point . I know the RFC do private cycles too but I had a friend who has put me off there and she has used both gcrm and rfc and she didn't have a good experience . And there isn't anywhere else in NI. Anyone any advice?

Has anyone had success with gcrm recently ? Or went abroad and had success ?

H Mrsr2017

I'm in the same conundrum and been in touch with a clinic in Prague. This would be our first cycle as I just can't wait on nhs go for however long. We've found prague prices are a lot more reasonable than here, more choice, more modern methods and very willing to answer any questions. We had free Skype consultation and an outline of approx. How long we would need to be abroad for. Only problem I'm having is getting amh blood test ...gcrm, gp and rfc have turned me down for private blood test as they don't do them 'standalone' so not sure where to turn...this also makes me worried about scans if I needed one here where could I go!

If it helps everyone I know either going through or went through ivf advised me to go away. As gcrm have monopoly now it's a money maker and not long before standards will start to fall whether that be care or attention or treatment.

Would love to hear of anyone else who has travelled abroad too!!

Amh

hi mrsr2017,
Just new to forum but I’m in similar situation, going to Prague with 99% certainty for next cycle
You can get private amh done at ultrasound direct on Lisburn rd it’s £100. Like yourself gcrm refused to do it as they said every clinic used their own reference ranges
Hope this helps!

Congratulations Seaside- lovely news. A nervous wait for you- best of luck for your scan.

I am starting a FET cycle with RFC in the new year. But I like to have a Plan B as it helps me feel less anxious if I have a back up plan.

I hope you don’t mind me asking a few things about cycling in Prague. Even if you want to PM me.
Where do you recommend in Prague? Rough cost of ICSi? What tests do you need done in N.Ireland? How many times do you have to fly over? How long did you have to stay? Did you get your tracking scans done here at home- where did you go? Anything else important to know about cycling in Prague?

Sorry for all the questions! Would be really useful to know our options and how easy it would be to go elsewhere if needed.

Thank you. Hoping you have a wonderful happy healthy pregnancy.

Seaside I would be so interested in getting some information on Prague. GCRM took weeks to reply to my email and at that were reluctant to give me any information they told me to make an appointment. Going away seems daunting but that is amazing that your 1st cycle worked. Congratulations : D

Ok ladies will sum up as best I can.

We used medical travel czech who's sister clinic is gynem clinic prague which is the clinic we used. There are a few others if you google. .cube , gennet, etc. But on recommendation we used gynem as success rates were good and relatively new clinic so no waiting list. Free Skype consultation, pick up from airport to accommodation and first transfer to clinic included in their price. Icsi is standard treatment and with own eggs and sperm costs 1990euros which with poor exchange rate was about £1850 for us. We also paid extra for imsi due to male factor ..We don't even get offered that treatment over here and cost an extra £350. You do pay extra for freezing and depends on how many you have as to the price. I had all scans done at the clinic and you have a dedicated coordinator that keeps you up to date everyday with all that's going on and can translate although very rarely needed. We flew from Dublin both last minute flights which was the only real stressful part since I'm a control freak. We stayed in air bnb which can be as cheap or expensive as you wish...We went mid range with cooking facilities. in total for travel accommodation treatment and spending/food money we paid approx. £3800 and it was a 10day trip for us. Prague is lovely and the treatment we received was of a high standard. If we have to do this again(hopefully not fingers crossed) we would definitely travel again.

Hope this helps ladies!!!!

X

Thanks so much for this information Seaside, I had a good chat with OH last night and he thought it was a good option. Will hold out for NHS app now in new year and if all else fails this could be my next step. I emailed Gynem and they got back to me right away with so much information. Really hoping my 1st go works x

Oh Lauren the wait is the worst! I had 4day transfer (my choice due to flights ..clinic wanted 5day but would have meant staying full 2 weeks as we had work etc) and we transference 1 blastocyst and 1morula. I tested 10days after transfer and had faint positive...it was a gamble testing early but I was losing sleep and all sorts so just bit the bullet. Although could have went either way I was just lucky it showed so early!! You have good will power holding out as long!!!! Good luck for test day:)

Congrats lauren that's fabulous news!! Enjoy being pregnant...it's out of your control now so savour every minute.

Yes had scan last wed at 6 weeks because had some sharp pains and was worried about ectopic but happy to say all was good and seen a heartbeat! Settled me too as I think seeing heartbeat reduces the risk of anything bad happening slightly. Although now can't wait for 12 week to make sure we are still good!!

When will you have a scan Lauren? I've to take progesterone suppositions until 2 weeks so really bloated!!

Thanks girls. With the rfc you come off the progesterone on test date as they say your body should now be making enough hormones tho this does make me nervous as i know most other clinics stat on them for much longer. Have to have faith in them i suppose. They will do a scan at around 7 weeks so count down is on. Im the same been having sharp pains which makes me nervous but also think my ovarys havent quite recovered yet. Exciting times seaside so happy you ve had such lovely news in your scan! Xx

Hey Mrsr2017,

New to the site and just finished my first IVF with GCRM which was a failed cycle. Didn't book yet to go for my review appointment as I'm still upset and disappointed but will give them a call next week. I wont be using them again and we are considering using Gennet, Prague. From what I have heard Dr. Moohan in Derry works with Gennet and does all the scans etc from his clinic. Thinking back on all my appointments with them, I didn't really get much info on the process but with the help of ladies on Rollercoaster.ie I got a lot of info on the IVF process. I have low AMH & both tubes are blocked. Did they give you much Luteal Support after ET? I only got 8 clicks of Ovitrille 3 days after, which I think wasn't enough but as I'm new to all this I don't know if that is normal or not. Did you go with Prague in the end?

Hi skippy

I’m so sorry that your cycle failed - is really is a horrific experience and I hope one you don’t have to repeat .i have low amh also and severe endo - we also have male factor issues so we aren’t a straight forward case and I think that’s where our problem with gcrm lies .

In the end due to annual leave problems etc we went back to gcrm even though both me and my husband had doubts I just wanted to cycle again . I asked a lot more questions etc this time but to be honest this forum and google were more of a help..I can’t fault the nurses or *some* of the docs. - top class . But I just don’t feel like we got the support we needed when I actually got pregnant from that cycle . I got one blood test and that was me left -no progesterone or anything to try and support the pregnancy (I did ask). I miscarried at 6+1 and I got very little support from them throughout my miscarriage as well. I know that the MC probably would have happened no matter what but I can’t help wondering if it was something silly like progesterone problem due to endo as it was top grade embie . But anyway I don’t blame them I just feel like I could have had a bit more information when I asked for it and a bit more support . Review appointment after miscarriage was the last straw - I’ll never go back to gcrm.

We are going abroad for next cycle - have consult and tests etc over Easter then will go from there . We chose a Clinic in Greece that specialises in complex cases but I know a lot of ladies on here have cycled in Prague and have had success it has a really good reputation. Good luck whatever you decide xx

Thank you Mrsr, it's very difficult isn't it. I'm not saying gcrm are no good I just don't think I got enough progesterone to help me along either but they were lovely... not very helpful info wise. I'm really considering Gennet this time so will look into it more and see how it goes.
I hope Greece works out alot better for you this time.xx
