Lining Will Not Thicken!!!

I'm just back from yet another scan only to have received more devestating news. I have read all the information I can get my hands on about thickening the uterine lining and cannot find anyone in the same situation as me, so I'm really hoping some of you out there can help in some way. Basically, to cut a long story short, my body will NOT respond to the medication to thicken the lining. The first natural cycle was cancelled in January because it only reached 4.5. Then they down regulated me again in march and started to build up the progynova. I got to 6.1 and they doubled the meds with the intention to defrost the embryos a few days later once it reached 7mm. However, a few days later the scan showed it was only 2.8!!!! We were so shocked. I hadn't bled and the nurse and doctor said they had never seen this before. They kept increasing the meds until I was on 18 mg of progynova a day, but again the lining only reached 3.7. We were really upset, but the doctor decided to cancel this cycle. I stayed down regulated using the nasal spray 4 times a day. After my next period they reduced the nasal spray (down reg) to twice a day and I started on the patches, two patches changed every 2 days. I had a scan after 9 days and we were delighted to see the lining at 5.2. The meds stayed the same and we went in for our scan today with the hope that it had reached 7mm however we received the devestating news that the lining is now 3.8 again. I'm so upset, the doctors can't understand it. They have no answers for this, she suggests I come back in on Friday but we are possibly at the stage of considering surrogacy, we have 13 frozen embryos. She said she can't up my meds as I'm on their max dose and my womb is not thickening. I don't know what to think, I've just been left so upset and with no answers. Has this happened to anyone else?

I don't know much about lining. However my clinic suggests a high protein diet during stimulation to help follicles and lining. I hope you get some answers from your clinic.

I know that there has been research into using Viagra to thicken the uterine lining and, if I remember correctly, there was one lady here that used it with success. I don't think it is common practice as yet though. If you are interested you can read about it here:
Viagra Shown To Thicken Endometrium | OB/GYN News | Find Articles (Not a Fertility Zone endorsed link) which gives information about a VERY small study that was done. There are more, similar reports if you visit the dreaded Dr Google on the subject...

Hope your next scan shows a thicker lining

ETS - there are at least two ladies currently using FZ who are pregnant after using Viagra as part of their protocol. One is about 8 or 9 weeks and the other is close to 20 weeks now

Hi Cait,

Congratulations for your 13 embryos!

I am so very sorry about your lining, like Maria I have never heard of this problem before. But hopefully all is not lost yet. It is absolutely horrible when you set your hopes up, you are so ready to give it a go and things are being delayed. Your embryos are safe however and patiently waiting for you :-)

As you said surrogacy might be an option. As Maria said a change in your diet might be an option. You might be able to ask your clinic / GP to monitor one of your natural cycles with no drugs whatsoever to see if how is your lining in a normal menstural period. You can start seeking out all these options together.

Hi Cait, I have lining issues too.... my first and only round was unsuccesful due to what was probably too thin a lining as it only reached 6.9mm, with every drug going and double patches! Since then I have tried progynova, provera and clomid all unsuccessfully to buld my lining up.
My lining on a natural "normal" cycle has been monitored by my nhs consultant and on its own, barely reaches 1.7mm. I am now taking dianette non stop until the lining is thick enough to go back for my frosties! at the last scan my lining was 3.9, so its getting there slowly. I've been on Dianette for 8 weeks now and i have a very persistant consultant demanding i'm scanned regularly which helps.

have you been scanned for any scarring etc in the womb to check everything is as it should be?I wish you lots of luck with your treatment, and hope that you find some medication soon that will help that stubborn lining to build up.

Thank you all so much for your inputs. I had my follow up appointment with my consultant today and she scanned me firstly. My lining had gotten to 4mm but did not show the triple lining that it had in previous scans etc. So even though she had said she would chance a transfer at 4mm, today she did not want to chance it because the lining was so bad. She did a biopsy and though she won't have the results back for another 2 weeks she is looking for a condition called 'premature luteinizing'. I am wondering if anyone has come across this before?

Hi Cait,
Just wondering how your lining is doing I know your post is a little old. I have the same problem. The thickest I have been is around 5. Have changed clinics snd am now on day 3 of progynova..

Hi Kirst

I had lining issues. As you can see from my signature I had 2 FET cycles cancelled due to lining not thickening, and indeed going backwards. I got to around 6mm both times which reduced back to 3/4mm in each case, so both cycles were cancelled pre ET.

I then had a hysteroscopy to see whether that would reveal the issue but all was OK, so on my next FET cycle my clinic then upped my progynova to 4 tablets a day (had been on 2 or 3 on previous cycles), plus 2 patches every 3 days and I got to 7mm. My clinic like 8mm usually but went ahead with ET a week later (they never told me how thick the lining was on ET day), and as you can see I am now 34 weeks PG. So I guess my message is don't give up hope. My clinic said that lining not thickening wasn't common but does happen and sometimes just 'one of those things'. I gave my body a bit of a break between the 2nd and 3rd FET cycles and maybe that helped as well.

Lining not responding

Hi Cait,

I know this is an old thread but I was just wondering how you went with thickening up your lining?

My partner and I had a successful round of IVF getting 5 frozen embryos however we cant do anything with them as my endometrium lining will not thicken up.

I have been on 10mg of progynova and 2x patches of estraderm for the last 2.5 weeks but apparently Im not responding.
Its devastating. How did things work out for you?
