Metformin - pros & cons??

Hi all, im a newbie here, not up to date on all the short hand talk (sorry) so i'll have to go the long way round lol.
Im currently waiting for my 3rd consultant appointment (when they give me the main fetility drugs etc) in the meantime i have been given Metformin as i have pcos and was told this will help reduce the size of the cycts thus helping me get better chances of retrieving eggs from the follicles.
I was wondering if anyone has any side effects from taking metformin? Im currently on 3x500mg a day (after taking 2x500mg the second wk and 1x500mg the first week) Since taking the metformin i constantly feel like im going to be sick....not the "sick in the throat" feeling, but that queasy stomach churning sickly
:puke: I used to enjoy my daily cups of coffee, but since the metformin ive gone right off it, same goes for anyhting creamy in substance or things that look like they might churn my stomach. Sorry if it sounds a bit graphic, but i can only ask the people who are in the same boat as me....please help, newbie in need!!

Hi Waylou,

Welcome to FZ, you will find this site extremely useful and if your any thing like me you'll soon become addicted.

Like you I have pcos and I've been taking metformin on and off for over a year but continually for over 5 months. Metformin has been called the miracle drug by many and helps to produce better egg quality.
The side affects are awful, but do disappear within a few weeks There is a thread on here just relating to pcos and another just relating to metformin that you might find useful.
For me, I didn't feel any sickness, however I did have major bowel problems. I found that cutting out certain foods such as dairy and greasy/fatty foods around the time of taking the med's, side effects were massively reduced.
I'm currently taking 1 x 500mg tablet in a morning with toast (weight watchers as that's low carb, and carbs feed the cysts in your ovaries) and 2 x 500mg tablets after my evening meal. Seems to do the trick for me.

Stick with it hun and you will find what works best for you xx
