Wessex Fertility Limited, Southampton

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has used this clinic? we are considering changing to our local clinic rather than Nuffield in Woking. It took an hour to get there. I had 7 scans before EC as I had cysts. So that meant 7 days extra off work for me and DH. I didn't want to go on my own, I would of got lost driving that far and my DH, wanted to support me. If we go to local hospital then I can nip in and out in an hour for scans by myself. However, Wessex Fertility in Southampton doesn't have as high success rate. But then I didn't get a success with Woking anyway? Really would be great if anyone has an advice. Thank You :innocent:

Morning! I haven't used the Wesses myself but know that Dwarf did and is due to have her baby this month! If you PM her, I'm sure she'd be happy to tell you about her experiences with the clinic!

She's got a diary in the trying again section or you could PM her.

I know she was impressed with them so she'd be a good person to talk to!

Edited to add, and I think her consultant specialised in treating women with polycystic ovaries.

Hi there,

I'm in Basingstoke and have just been to Wessex for my first IVF this month. Coincidentally I'll be moving to Woking soon and was wondering what the Nuffield was like! I think one of the reasons the Wessex may have lower success rates is that they take a wider range of candidates. I know I wasn't great on paper, aged 42, AMH of 2.8, BMI of just under their max - but I was pretty pleased with how I was treated there. Chantal, one of the consultants was absolutely lovely.

Anyway, PM me if you want any more info! Good luck with your treatment. :xxx3:

I have not been treated at the Wessex but went to there and Woking and despite the journey opted for Woking! Why don't you go along and get a feel for the place? I agreed that their rates are lower but they do treat a wider range of patients. I spoke to Dwarf and she really rates them!

It is a long trip to Woking but I treat it as my chill out time, DH only comes for the actual procedure and other than that I go on my own, pick a cd, whack it up and sing my heart out all the way!

Are you seeing Nick Brook?

Hi thanks indiechick, yeah have been seeing Nick since last August. I don't really want to change as he knows us so well. But I really won't go on my own, I hate driving long distance. Also it didn't work so have lost a bit of my faith with them. They were all brilliant there though don't get me wrong. But I have had so much time off work, that is making us even more skint! If it is just at wessex I can be in and out at back at work within an hour or so rather than the whole day or half day. And DH doesn't have to come either then. What was your reasoning for not going to Wessex? xx

Hello again

No reason at all really, I suppose we saw Nick at the Princess Anne and we just felt so comfortable and so continued with him.

I would defo suggest going along to the Wessex and seeing what you think, The thought of just being able to nip out is sooooo appealing and I must say I have thought of changing for exactly the same reason! Give them a call, they have always been really helpful!

Donz has been there too a while ago but is thinking of going back, I shall direct her here to give you her view!

Hey 'Im hopeful' (another Southampton girl!) yippee! Lovely to meet ya.

I was at The Wessex 3 yrs ago. We had IVF and then FET and neither had worked and because I was a little naive back then I thought I would try another clinic which is what we did but it was the biggest mistake I'd made.

The Wessex treat their patients like diamonds and they are all so lovely. I really missed them and I have a follow-up appt on Friday to help make our minds up as to whether we go back to them for treatment or not. Think we may though. Its Wessex or treatment abroad (because of costs).

I rang them after 3 years and they recognised my voice, now thats saying something! The Clinic Ive just left probably wouldnt recognise me in the corridor.

I cant rate the Wessex highly enough, they were excellent 3 years ago and most of the staff are still there.

I hope this helps in some way and maybe we'll pass eachother in the waiting room, which I may add is one of the nicest waiting rooms Ive been in. Defo a lovely clinic which always helps.

Thanks girls, your advice has been amazing. We are seeing Nick at the Princess Anne on Thursday I am armed with a letter to see if we can get some sort of funding. I spoke with Wessex on Friday (a few hours after BFN) and the girl on the phone was lovely. I have been sent all paperwork and there is quite a big price difference! I am 25years old and been told will not recieve a shot on NHS until I reach 36! 11 years to wait!!!!!! Sorry ladies (not sure of your ages) But that is ages away and I'm scared of getting old as it is!!!

I think if anyone wanted to, we should arrange a get together. A Southampton / Portsmouth wanna be mums group!!!!
This is the hard bit, other than one other person I have recently found out is going through the same, I've not seen her in years. But we are meeting this week. I know nobody else going through this horrible ride.

PM if anyone thinks it's a good idea?

You are all brilliant, Thank You :xxx3:

The funding issues sucks! I have been fighting tooth and nail and have finally got them to agree to funding as although I am 32 DH had cancer, however they still have not actually given me any funding and I am now paying for my 3rd go!

Like Donz said we had a great meet and are going for another in Oct!

It's great to hear good things about the Wessex, we are going there for our first appointment in a couple of weeks. We have been going to The Hants Clinic in Basingstoke for our IUI - they are great too, all lovely and very caring and reliable. We can't have IVF there but they work as a satellite so can go just up the road for all our scans etc.

Thanks for putting our minds at ease as you just never know about these places.

Wessex Fertility 2009

Another newbie to the site. About me - 37 years old, DP 42, ttc our first for nearly 2 years. Started first cycle of IVF a month ago at Wessex Fertility, and went for day 9 follicle scan this morning and it wasn't as good as I had hoped.
Is there anyone from the Southampton area who is going through this and would like to hear me moan about how I took my mum's advice about 'keeping my legs crossed' too seriously when I was younger? Oh the irony.... X(

RE: hi

Hi,

I haven't see any recent activity on this thread but maybe someone else has used Wessex in the past year. We've decided to use them for our 2nd ICSI (1st was a BNF) as I finally qualify for NHS funding.
I was waiting and waiting under the old funding rules (36-39) to reach 36 and in 2 weeks I will. This year they have hanged the age criteria but luckily they made provisions for those 35 and wating so I still qualify but have to have the treatment within a year because the new age limit from Dec will be 34.
We will be doing it through the Hampshire Clinic (Dr O'Sullivan) for scans and Wessex for EC & ET. I can't wait. Has anyone gone the similar route?

Bonnie

RE: hi

Hi Bonnie
I used this clinic twice in the last two years. Two BFN's
I will never use them again.
The only reason they gave for my lack off success was egg quality and they suggested I go on to use donor eggs.
Now I am having treatment at another clinic (ARGC) I see that there was so much more they could have done. Wessex set you off on a dose of stims drugs and leave you to it. They only scanned me on day 12 and 14 of stims and didn't check my blood throughout. The ARGC check your blood once or twice a day, scan you every other day and tailor your stimulation drugs daily to be exactly what you need on each day.
There success rate is 22% The ARGC is 42%. I'm sure there is a reason for that.
Good luck.

Hi all,

I hve just gotten my NHS referral for IVF/ICIS to Wessex and would like feedback. My Dr said that once they receive the referral letter I will have initial consultation within a 'couple of months' and then treatment will start a 'couple of months' after that. Is this true? That all seems rather too fast-paced for the NHS!

Also has anyone had any success with their treatment there as the success rates aren't as high as others.

Wessex

Hi Twincletoots.
As you can see from my post I have had two rounds at the Wessex and would be happy to talk to you about them. You might not like it though!
I think if in doubt look at the success rates.

Just to add on from my last post - After my second failed cycle at the Wessex the only reason they gave for the failure was my egg quality. Easy to do to take any responsibility away from them. The said I should give up on having a child of my own and consider donor eggs.

I changed to the ARGC (which they talked me out of for my second round), had one round and am now pregnant. I will continue to be monitored, have regular bloods and scans and be prescribed suitable drugs by them until I am at least 12 weeks, and beyond if necessary, as they feel that it is not only important to get you pregnant but to keep you pregnant.

One more thing. When I got pregnant naturally after my second round with Wessex, I called them to ask if there was anything that could be done to help the pregnancy along as I had lost my first baby. They said no. If only I had called the ARGC and not the Wessex.

HI Girls,

My story is almost identical to Sooz. Had a round at Wessex and got a positive but they didn't help me in any way to stay pregnant despite my immune issues they knew about. Didn't even suggest aspirin. I went with ARGC this time and I am pregnant and I feel well cared after due to their close monitoring. Sorry SunnyBee that I had to give you a negative Wessex story. I am sure it works for many others.
