PCOS, Clomid, metformin!

Hi all,

Ok since having no issues on all my tests and DH's semen analysis. Gynae decided to give me clomid although am ovulating fine on my own. Took it day 2-6. Went back for scan on day 12 and he saw right ov had reacted as expected to clomid but the left is showing pcos! I was shocked as in the prior 2 scans this was not picked up, Cans so far were:

day 3 - no pcos -March 2010
day 12 - no pcos - June 2010
day 12 - July -PCOS! but no symptoms of it at all!

so was given this horrible drug called metaforin.

pls can anyone who can advise??

Hiya,

I have PCO on one ovary too. In what way did the doc say that PCO is showing on the ovary?

You can have PCO but have no symptoms of it. PCOS is the syndrome, i.e. overweight, excess hair, alopecia among a few other symptoms.

Check out these threads.

There is a PCOS section HERE there is loads of information here and also a really useful guide to weight and PCOS HERE

There is a FERTILITY DRUGS section HERE where there is lots of information about the various fertility drugs

Metformin is a drug which helps with insulin resistance in PCOS. Has your doctor checked whether you are insulin resistant? As you don't have any symptoms of PCOS it may be that metformin doesn't help. Its most commonly used as a diabetic drug, but with PCOS you're at higher risk of developing diabetes if you have insulin resistance.

Are you at a specialist fertility clinic or does your cons specialise in fertility??

Hi There Flic

Thanks for your prompt mail.

Yes I am with a consultant who specialises in this. The reason he told me was that when he did my scan he say the honeycomb type look on the left hand side and the fact that the left ovary handed responded to clomid like the right had. He said its nothing to worry about as i dont have any of the symptoms and have a period which is spot on 28 days.

Also many congrats on being a mum!

The ovary looks like it has a 'string of pearls' on it with PCO. It could be then that you have it very mildly. Especially as you ovulate and have regular AF's.

I just don't understand why he's given you metformin.

Thanks by the way!!!

According to the nurse I saw after this gynae uses a combination of drugs to boost fertility and because the left ov did not do as expected he wanted me to take it.

its has been harsh on my stomach though but getting used to it.
