Birth Child

Hi

My DH has said we can look into adoption and I am over the moon.

Only challenge I have now is Kaynan's age. All the agencies I have looked at won't consider us till he is either 3 or 5.

I know adoption is a long process and not one we want to rush. So I wanted to start now and by time we finished kj will be that age anyway.

Has anyone got any ideas of an agency that will consider us?

Thanks

Hi Gemma

Lovely to hear that your DH is willing to look into adoption. I think that you will find that most of the agencies will have guidelines for ages of birth children. The reason I suspect is that the child that is being adopted needs total focus and attention having experienced everything they have gone through and by having a younger child this would impact the quality time you would spend as they would need looking aftert and nurturing too.

I know it sound a long time and the process is a long time but really enjoy your little one as the process is totally emotional and exhausting.

I have a couple of agencies to speak to today but I think if there answer is the same we may not be able to adopt. My husband has concerns over his age if it drags on for years which I can understand and support. More tx might be the way to go but adoption is preferred.

Might be that we leave it now and then DH says ok when KJ is three but by then he will be 47 and is worried about it dragging on for years.

Thanks so much for the replies- it really is a mindfield.x

Spoke to local social services and they will let us apply when Kaynan is two and we can have a younger child (what DH wants) so in the mean time gonna enjoy
Kaynan and look forward to it.

Is there any research or anything I can do in the meantime to speed the process up.x

You might want to get hold of a few books.. I found them invaluable.. have a look at adoption UK website as well.. that's a mine of information..

I found Maria's Diary and Parenting the Child that Hurts (can't remember the authors off the top of my head) great books!

Great you only have to wait until K is 2.. it will fly by!

Hi

I know this is forward planning and possibly silly thinking too far ahead when our baby hasn't arrived yet but I'd like to adopt and I didn't even consider that you'd have to wait until your child was a certain age. I was hoping to start the process 6 months-1 year after baby born. Will they let you apply and get approved earlier but not match you to a child until the baby is the right age? We were thinking of adopting 1 or 2 older kids ( aged 3-5) so if we wait til our baby is 2 before applying our baby will be between 3-5 too when we hopefully manage to adopt, I'd have preferred to have done it when our baby was younger.

Hi Hun

Our local authority won't even let us start the process till Kaynan is 2. Some agencies said he would have to be 3 or 5.

You will probably find they won't let you adopt a child that is older than your child and there will have to be roughly a 2 year age gap- so if your little one is 3 you could
adopt a child between 0 and 1.

It really is different with every authority and you would have to research your local ones.

I would think yours would be similar to mine though cause we are staffordshire.x
