NEW PARENT CHAT THREAD

Excuse me for jumping in on this thread but I saw you'd posted Wardie and couldn't just read and run. So sorry to hear L is this poorly. Hopefully the doctors will be able to discover what's wrong and get her right as rain again ASAP. These things always seem to happen at the worst time too which just adds to your stress. Fingers crossed and sending lots of love to you all x x x

Adoption help

Right, nap time so I can try and answer some of your questions..... Your epilepsy - you will both have to have full medicals at some stage during the process. I'd be upfront from the beginning and don't see why it should affect your application. I have rheumatoid arthritis and the social workers asked for a letter from my consultant saying how I cope day to day etc. I'd had recent surgery the 2nd time too and this didn't cause any problems for us. From our very first phonecall to bringing our fi...

Adoption help

Hello! I didn't want to read and run. When I've got a bit more time this evening I'll try and answer your questions for you. I have recently been through the adoption process twice and now have 2 girls. You're welcome to read through my diary here which should tell you quite a bit. It's very normal to have so many questions and feel apprehensive but it's also exciting! I'll be back later x x

Everyone is pregnant but ME!!!

I can promise you you are certainly not the only one that feels or has felt like this! My TTC journey lasted about 8 years and now I am out the other side of it I can honestly say I am a completely different person to the one that started. No, it's not fair watching everyone around you falling pg at the drop of a hat and it's even worse having to experience the feelings that you are whilst knowing that you are a good person but unfortunately this is all part and parcel of struggling to conceive....

Pre-Adoption Training course

Laura, our DD is now 14 months. She came home with us 4 days before turning 8 months so we are incredibly lucky to have seen lots of 'firsts'

Pre-Adoption Training course

Hi Laura, It's lovely to hear that you're embarking on adoption. We brought our DD home in July and have never been happier! Like you I was quite apprehensive over the prep group days but it really was a strange situation in that before you know it you're talking with all these strangers like you've known them for years and I couldn't wait to get back for day two in the end! We didn't have role plays either but as. Wardie says, group discussions etc. as far as panel goes you will be expected to ...

need a helping hand

Hi Rianon, I'm so glad the info pack was good and you're feeling more positive about it all again. I lost track of the amount of books I read but one I would really recommend is 'An adoption diary' by Maria James. Although it is 10 years old the process is basically the same. It's really quick and easy to read and I found it really useful for passing round to any of our friends and family that wanted to know more. We got a huge reading list when we went on our prep course but in general I'd just...

need a helping hand

It is right that the VA's place the more 'problematic' older children. Although we were really impressed with the VA we went to see we weren't ready to give up our chance of a younger child which is why we went with a LA. Fingers crossed your LA will be more open and helpful. Talking to your GP sounds like it could be helpful too. When we started home study we did so with the aim of being placed with a sibling group partly because we always talked of having 2 and partly because it would mean we ...

Oh Rianon, I don't blame you for being in tears. That sounds like a horrible conversation. I feel so sorry that this has happened to you when you are only just starting out and needing a helping hand......I take it you were talking to your LA? Please don't give up just yet. Why not try calling some VA's in your area. Google voluntary agencies or look in your yellow pages. Call them and explain what your LA said and see if they feel the same. I know there is a recommended age gap between children...

need a helping hand

It's not a silly question. Your approval process will be done by whoever you decide to go with be that your Local Authority or a Voluntary Agency. We went with an LA and their conditions were that after we were approved we allow them 3 months to try and match us with one of their children which they did. If that hadn't had happened with in 3 months then we were free to go on the national register and start looking for children ourselves through Be My Parent any Adoption UK etc. Congratulations o...

need a helping hand

We are going from strength to strength with the weaning I'm glad to say. DD is 10 and a half months now and moved in with us when she was a week short of 8 months. We are in Kent and as far as I'm aware our timescale was quite normal. We were however working on the old process and the new one came into effect in July and is meant to get you through to panel a lot quicker. I don't think your being from another country will have any negative effect on an adoption. Indeed you may find it may be of ...

need a helping hand

Hi Rianon How exciting you've made the decision to adopt! Although it might seem quite daunting at the moment once you're underway it won't seem so bad! When we decided to adopt we started by googling agencies in our area and also found a whole section in the Yellow Pages on adoption and fostering. The main difference at this stage is trying to decide whether to go with a local authority (LA) or a voluntary agency (VA). We phoned our own LA first which is where I'd suggest you start also. It may...

Slightly worried we've missed the boat...

Thank you so much for all your comments, you've really eased my mind. Tonight was actually quite fantastic. I served up pesto pasta and she wolfed it down along with a running commentary! She then went on to have mango for dessert so a 2 course success tonight! x x

Slightly worried we've missed the boat...

Thank you so much for all your advice. I'm not stressing over it (yet!) just more worried that I was going to have a bit of a battle on my hands from her latish start. We have a high chair that fixes to the table so she is with us at every meal. Tonight I made a lamb stew from the BLW cookbook I have and she looked so excited when I put some in front of her and immeadiately picked up a chunk of lamb and stuffed it in her mouth. I've obviously got a proper carnivore on my hands! I don't think any...

Slightly worried we've missed the boat...

Hello! We've newly adopted our DD who turned 8 months last week. Although she's an absolute dream and the foster carer was fantastic I'm slightly concerned that she hasn't been weaned properly. From all I've read this week I understand that weaning should really be started at 4 months and we know that the foster carer only started giving her bits at 6 months consisting of baby biscuits and fruit puddingy things. DD will act like a little baby bird opening her mouth so wide for me to spoon feed h...
